Acupuncture for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a transformative journey, filled with joys and challenges as your body supports the growth of a new life. For centuries, acupuncture has been recognized as a safe and effective approach to alleviate discomforts and promote well-being during pregnancy. Let’s explore how this practice can benefit you during this exciting time.

What Is Acupuncture for Pregnancy?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that involves the placement of very thin needles at specific points on the body. These points are selected based on their ability to influence energy flow and encourage the body’s natural healing responses. During pregnancy, acupuncture is adapted to address symptoms and enhance physical and emotional balance.

By focusing on areas that support hormonal shifts, reduce inflammation, and ease tension, acupuncture offers relief for various pregnancy-related symptoms. It provides a natural way to manage your health and prepare for labor.

Safety of Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture is widely regarded as safe when administered by a licensed practitioner who has experience with prenatal care. Special care is taken to avoid points that could stimulate uterine contractions prematurely. Many health professionals support its use as part of a holistic prenatal care plan. Studies have shown that acupuncture can help lower stress levels, which is vital for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

It’s important to choose a practitioner who understands the nuances of prenatal acupuncture and follows appropriate safety measures.

Benefits of Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture offers a variety of benefits at every stage of pregnancy, helping to address both physical and emotional concerns:

First Trimester Relief

During early pregnancy, many individuals experience nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce these symptoms, especially when targeting points like Pericardium Six (Pc6). This gentle technique provides a much-needed reprieve during the initial weeks of pregnancy.

Second Trimester Support

As your body adjusts to the growing baby, you may feel discomfort in your back, hips, or shoulders. Acupuncture can alleviate these aches by encouraging circulation and relaxing tight muscles. It can also address heartburn and other digestion-related issues that are common during this phase.

Third Trimester Preparation

In the final months, discomfort and anxiety may intensify. Acupuncture supports restful sleep, reduces swelling, and helps your body prepare for labor. It has also been used to encourage a head-down position in cases of breech presentation, especially around the 34th week.

Labor and Postpartum

Acupuncture can play a role in preparing your body for labor by softening the cervix and relaxing the pelvic region. During the postpartum period, it supports recovery by managing after-pains, promoting healing, and encouraging milk production.

How Acupuncture Complements Prenatal Care?

Acupuncture works alongside traditional medical care, offering a natural way to manage common symptoms and improve overall well-being. It’s not a replacement for regular prenatal check-ups but can be an effective addition to your care plan. Many individuals find it helps them feel more empowered and connected during their pregnancy.

FAQs About Acupuncture for Pregnancy

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel little to no pain during the process. The needles are extremely thin, and the experience is typically described as calming.

When should I start acupuncture during pregnancy?

You can begin at any stage. Many start early to manage nausea or later in pregnancy to prepare for labor.

Is acupuncture safe for everyone?

While generally safe, it’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner. Individuals with certain medical conditions should discuss this option with their healthcare provider.

Being a new parent is an exciting and challenging time. Breast and chest feeding is not always comfortable, but there are several options that a nursing parent has access to that make the experience better.

Here are three things to support your breast/chest feeding in Edmonton, AB:

  1. Consult with a lactation consultant or peer resource. Click here for the Edmonton Breast Feeding Directory.
  2. Try acupuncture. Acupuncture can be used to increase milk production, manage pain, release upper back and neck tension, resolved clogged ducts, support new moms’ mental health, and aid healing after cesarean sections. Book your acupuncture appointment online at accessibleacupuncture.ca.
  3. Make modifications to your diet. Drink more fluids, rest, take supplements, and keep trying. Chest/breast feeding is different for everyone, and it takes time to find what works for you and your baby. Some foods that may be helpful are oats, barley, fenugreek, and bone broth. Talk to your healthcare provider to learn more about supplements and foods for lactation.

The above photo shows the small intestine one (Si 1) acupuncture point. This acupuncture point is lovely for breast/chest feeding mothers who are working on increasing their milk supply. Si 1 is usually combined with another acupuncture point called Ren 17 located in the center of the chest to promote lactation.

Lactation and breast/chest feeding challenges can be frustrating, but they don’t have to be! There are options for you that can be implemented yourself or provided to you by a healthcare practitioner to make this time in your life more comfortable. Be sure to reach out to professionals that can help you.

I would love the opportunity to help you with your lactation needs. Call the clinic at 587-879-7122 to book in.

Acupuncture for Male Fertility

Women are not the only ones who can seek solutions to fertility issues, or to seek treatment. Infertility can affect men as well. Acupuncture can support not only male fertility, but male health in general.

Did you know?

Male factor infertility makes up 40% of infertility diagnoses.

There are four important things to think about when talking about male fertility with your health care team.

  • Motility: How far are the sperm swimming in a straight line.
  • Morphology: How many of them have one head, one tail, and appear normal?
  • Count: The number of sperm in a sample. This number will vary (sometimes dramatically) from week to week.
  • Volume: The sample size, usually in millilitres (ml).

Many factors affect male fertility including stress, sleep, weight, previous surgeries, hormone levels, medications, diabetes, genetics, blood pressure, heart disease, age, drug use, and varicocele.

Just as many things affect male fertility, there are many things that can help to improve fertility and decrease the chances of infertility. Those include:

  • Eating a healthy balanced diet
  • Getting 7-9 hours of sleep
  • Managing any health conditions
  • And staying active is helpful.

Acupuncture can support your health and fertility. To improve your male fertility book an appointment online with us using the link below or call the clinic at 587-879-7122.

Acupuncture for Fertility: Supporting Your Journey to Conception

couples

by Melanie Morrill | Feb 13, 2023

Trying to conceive (TTC) is a life-changing experience filled with hope and anticipation, but it can also come with emotional and physical challenges. Many people turn to acupuncture as a supportive, evidence-backed approach to improve fertility and overall reproductive health. Whether you’re just beginning or have been on your fertility journey for some time, acupuncture can provide a natural way to enhance your chances of conceiving.

Understanding Your Body and Fertility

For anyone trying to conceive, understanding the body’s fertility signals is empowering. Tools like basal body temperature (BBT) tracking, cervical mucus monitoring, and semen analysis provide insights into your reproductive health. Combining these methods with complementary approaches like acupuncture creates a comprehensive fertility plan.

Tracking BBT, for example, helps pinpoint ovulation by identifying temperature shifts during the menstrual cycle. If this interests you, check out our blog post on how to use BBT effectively here.

How Acupuncture Enhances Fertility

Acupuncture is a well-researched therapy that supports fertility in several key ways:

Improving Blood Flow: Enhances circulation to the uterus and ovaries, which promotes a healthier uterine lining for implantation and better egg development.

Regulating Hormones: Balances hormones like estrogen and progesterone, supporting regular ovulation and menstrual cycles.

Reducing Stress: Addresses stress—a known factor in fertility challenges—by calming the nervous system and reducing cortisol levels.

Supporting ART Treatments: Acupuncture is often used alongside IVF, IUI, FET, and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Studies show that acupuncture before and after embryo transfer may improve implantation rates.

Enhancing Egg and Sperm Quality: For men and women, acupuncture has been linked to improvements in reproductive health metrics, including sperm motility and egg quality.

When to Start Acupuncture for Fertility

Incorporating acupuncture into your fertility plan is beneficial at any stage, but starting three to six months before trying to conceive allows time to optimize your body’s natural rhythms. Even if you’ve already begun your TTC journey, it’s not too late—acupuncture can complement existing treatments or work as a stand-alone therapy.

Research Highlights: Acupuncture and Fertility

Current studies continue to support acupuncture’s role in fertility care. Evidence suggests:

Stress Reduction: Acupuncture lowers cortisol levels, improving emotional well-being and reducing the impact of stress on fertility.

Improved IVF Outcomes: Patients undergoing IVF who received acupuncture before and after embryo transfer showed higher implantation rates compared to those who didn’t.

Hormonal Regulation: Research indicates that acupuncture can help normalize irregular cycles by influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.

We love helping patients like Emma during their pregnancy! Check out this amazing review we received from her:

“Melanie has been an incredible source of information, calm and support during the first trimester of my pregnancy. I struggled with severe nausea, gagging/ retching, strong food aversions and morning sickness since week 5 and I am now 11 weeks. The acupuncture helped to battle the symptoms when medication did not which was relief as it took a while to convince my doc that the meds were not working! Needless to say it’s been rough and during this time Melanie suggested at home remedies, simple food & drink swaps and routine changes. With Melanie’s help, I feel like I have slowly regained some normality in my life and would happily recommend her to anyone! Thank you so, so much!!”
